6 Simple Tricks to Preventing Urinary Tract Infection
We all know urinary tract infection (UTI) as one of those illnesses that we experience at some point in our lives. In fact at least 50% of all women will have a UTI in their lifetime. But what most of us don’t know is that a simple infection could lead to more serious consequences if not addressed right away. On top of that, recurrences are so common that UTI starts to become a health problem that will continue to bother us every now and then.

Don’t hold it in. You could be guilty of holding your pee just because you have other things to do. But putting off going to the bathroom actually gives bad bacteria the chance to build up in your urethra and bladder. Make sure that you pee at least every three to four hours and take the time to fully empty your bladder. After peeing, you should wipe from front to back to prevent any bacteria from going into your urethra.
Drink enough fluids. You probably hear this a lot, but it really pays to drink six to eight-ounce glasses of water every day because it is still the best fluid to keep your bladder and your body healthy. You also need to cut down on alcohol and caffeinated drinks like coffee, soda and tea to avoid urinary tract infections.
Pee after sex. A lot of people don’t follow this advice, but peeing right after sex actually helps you flush out any bacterial intruders that could easily give you an infection or worse, more serious health problems. It’s also very important to practice good hygiene during sex, making sure that you take a shower or at least clean your genital area—and any other object that goes into it—before going into action.
Do your Kegels. If there’s one exercise that you can easily do anywhere and at any time, it should be your Kegel exercises. This pelvic floor muscle exercise helps keep your urine in your bladder so you won’t have to go through the embarrassment of a leak when you laugh, lift, cough or feel the sudden urge to pee and you don’t have access to a bathroom yet.
Invest in cotton underwear. Those tight, sexy thongs may make you feel sexy, but cotton underwear is still the best way to go if you’re going to prevent urinary tract infections. Also, avoid wearing tight-fitting clothes, especially around the genital area since it traps moisture and promotes bacterial growth.
Eat foods with antioxidants – Your diet should be the first thing to look into if you suffer from UTI from time to time. That’s why it is crucial to know which ones to eat and which ones to avoid. There are actually several foods high in antioxidants that you can add into your diet to prevent the occurrence of UTI.
When you do experience the first signs of urinary tract infection—small, frequent urine, pain or smelly urine—make sure to consult your doctor right away before things get worse and so you can be given UTI pain relief. But if you really want to keep away from the pain, discomfort and hassle of a urinary tract infection, practicing these six simple tricks is definitely a good start.
